{"id":53,"date":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calchurches.planetpov.com\/impact\/index.php\/2016\/09\/06\/legislation-fights-are-done-now-on-to-the-governor\/"},"modified":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T00:00:00","slug":"legislation-fights-are-done-now-on-to-the-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/churchimpact.org\/index.php\/2016\/09\/06\/legislation-fights-are-done-now-on-to-the-governor\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislation fights are done, now on to the Governor!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:left;height:0px\"><\/span><span style=\"display: table;width:auto;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px\"><a><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.churchimpact.org\/\/uploads\/4\/1\/4\/8\/41486323\/contact-button_orig.png?w=1160\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; none; max-width:100%\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image\"><\/a><span style=\"display: table-caption; caption-side: bottom; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\" class=\"wsite-caption\"><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"display:block;\"><span>Dear Friends:<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>The Legislative season is over, but there remains work to do with our Governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>Here are updates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>Thanks to you we were able to get an increase in SSI funds for those on disability \u2013 a small Cost of Living Allowance.\u00a0 That was in the budget, so it does not require further action from us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>We also got the cap on the Maximum Family Grant lifted.\u00a0 Now, babies born to families already on CalWORKs will receive an addition $133 per month for that child.\u00a0 This, too, went into the budget and is a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>We did not even know that Assembly Member Cheryl Brown (D-San Bernardino) was pushing a resolution, AJR 35, that told Congress to remove the prohibition on food stamps for those on disability.\u00a0 This resolution changes nothing immediately \u2013 that is a federal action \u2013 but it passed unanimously, both parties, both houses, and is now being sent to Congress.\u00a0 This is a significant step in righting the wrong of cutting food stamps from people who most need them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>What does require action are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><strong>AB 1066 <\/strong>\u2013 Overtime for farm workers.\u00a0 This is an historic and path-breaking bill giving farm workers parity on overtime pay with all other workers. This has been a central focus for National Farmworkers Ministry and for people of faith.\u00a0 That it passed is almost miraculous since we\u2019ve been working on this for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><strong>AB 1761 and 1762.<\/strong>\u00a0 These bills assist the victims of human trafficking.\u00a0 1761 permits the victim to use the fact of enslavement to protect against charges of non-serious, non-violent crimes committed under that duress and to have records sealed.\u00a0 1762 vacates records of prostitution and the like when the person so charged was trafficked.\u00a0\u00a0 These bills correct horrible wrongs done to victims of human trafficking who are victimized again by the indifference of the judicial system to their plight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><strong>SB 1107<\/strong> (Allen, D-Santa Monica) \u2013 This bill would permit local governments to create public financing for elections. It passed, at the 11<\/span><span>th<\/span><span> hour with a small bi-partisan vote.\u00a0 The Governor needs to hear from us that signing this into law is the will of the people.\u00a0 There is a Constitutional issue since some years back voters declared we could not do this, but Common Cause and Clean Money Campaign believe it does not violate that directive.\u00a0 Let the Governor know we think this is a critical first step for ending the power of money in elections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>NOTE to those of you in Sen. Hueso\u2019s district, San Diego 40: he refused to vote on this. After Republican Sen. Huff did, Hueso first put up an Aye vote, then took it back.\u00a0 He needs to hear from you that this cowardly behavior is not acceptable.\u00a0 His offices are:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <br \/><strong><em>Chula Vista 619-409-7690.\u00a0 El Centro: 760-335-3442.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><strong>SB 1349<\/strong> (Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys) This bill directs the Secretary of State, in conjunction with the Fair Political Practices Commission to create a user-friendly record of all political donations to any campaign, local, state, federal, candidate or ballot issue.\u00a0 Bringing transparency to our election donations system is critical as more money enters the system, then hides under obscure committee names \u2013 \u201cAmericans For\u201d or \u201cCalifornians Against\u201d.\u00a0 This requires full disclosure that we, the voters, may see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>The contact site for Governor Jerry Brown is compromised.\u00a0 Firefox has determined your contact information could be stolen, so we are bypassing the site in favor of calls or FAX numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><strong>Capitol \u2013 916-445-2841 and FAX 916-558-3160.\u00a0 This is the preferred number, often busy.
