Now your action is needed with the Governor!
The state budget has been passed by the Legislature, on time, balanced, with allocations all made.
Among the items included, items that the Governor has indicated he will keep, is funding to get rid of the cap on supporting any child born to a family on our state’s welfare program, CalWORKs. Now there will not be a cap on payments to families with newborns – they will all be covered. This gives families an addition $133 per month to help support the new life in their midst.
In sum – you spoke out, you called for justice for our state’s most impoverished children, and you succeeded!
Thank you all for writing to your legislators and the Governor to affirm our commitment to helping reduce childhood poverty!
Now, just to be on the safe side, please write or call Governor Jerry Brown to remind him he promised to sign the budget with this line item included. Don’t let him waffle out of this commitment!
You may call him at the Capitol at 916-445-2841. You may FAX at 916-558-3160.
You may send an email through his contact page here:
Under the dropdown box on topics, please select “Budget” then remind the Governor he promised to preserve budget funding to rid our state’s welfare program of the cap on the Maximum Family Grant. Tell him we expect him to keep his promise!
Your voices have mattered in every long, hard trek toward greater justice. Now we have lifted the cap on the Maximum Family Grant giving a chance for infants and toddlers to have a better life than they have had before when born to parents on welfare. It is past time we made a move toward true care for our state’s children. And you made it happen.
Thank you!
